About Us
School Overview
Westside Union Elementary School is an Elementary school located in Los Banos, California. Westside Union opened in August 1999 as a sixth-grade only school. Fifth grade was added in July 2001 and we also became a year-round school. In July 2007 we became an elementary school servicing grades Kindergarten through Sixth. The campus is located on a site that was constructed in the early 1900's and had been a junior high since 1967. Our school is committed to the fundamental belief that it takes a community effort to raise children to become responsible, contributing adults. Our mission is focused upon addressing the academic, emotional, and social needs of all students with Respect, Tolerance, and Integrity as our main values. Westside stresses significance on student learning and works to match the curriculum to District and State Standards. Teachers identify essential standards and set goals to have all students meet grade level proficiency. The purpose of our educational program is to prepare students to be lifelong learners and reach their potential in the world of work and higher education. An important component of this process is allowing students' access to Technology.
Parent Involvement
There are a number of opportunities for parent/community involvement at Westside Union Elementary School. Our School Site Council meets regularly throughout the year and visits classrooms two times a year. Parents have the opportunity to join the Parents Club and are encouraged to volunteer in their child's classroom. Adult members of the community are invited to our campus on Ag Day and Career Day to share information with our students. Awards assemblies recognizing student achievement and attendance are held three times a year, and parents are invited to attend. Parents are always welcome to visit Westside. Please contact us at (209) 827-9390 for details on how to get involved.
School History
The oldest sections were built in the early 1900's and were the old Westside Union High School. The school was remodeled in 1967. Westside Union High School became Los Banos Junior High School after the remodeling. The campus now houses Westside Union Elementary School, which opened as a 6th grade school in August 1999, changed to a 5th and 6th grade school in August 2001 and then changed to Kingergarten through Sixth grade in July 2007. There is an office, library, gym/kitchen and band room. In addition to the regular classrooms, there are 18 1/2 portables on this campus. It is currently on a traditional school calendar.
